Major European capitals are a reminder that most of those countries were colonial powers. The nationalities you meet in the streets always surprise me the Asians you meet in Amsterdam a reminder of the power and reach of the Dutch West India Company; the blacks in Paris a reminder of long relationships in Africa.
In addition the openness of European traditions and lifestyles have encouraged artists and refugees to live there comfortably.
I currently live in rural Oregon, far from cosmopolitan. Even though I consider myself an urban girl, having moved north from LA, I am not used to such a mix of nationalities and skin colors. I find it amazing and wonderful. Welcome to the world.
